"Skapa": Etymology:From Old Norseskapa(“to create”) Pronunciation:
With a natural inclination towards the arts, I have always been creative. at the age of eight I used to walk downtown Saint John NB and draw the oldest churches I could find, sitting on the front lawns with a sketch book. Whether it be music, sculpture, oil painting or a woodworking project I have always taken solace in creativity. At some point nearly ten years ago I knew I needed to choose a solid career path. I had been working odd jobs since I moved to Halifax at the age of 18 and while I enjoyed the piece-work tasks at the AGNS for installation work, A time as a painter with a student owned painting company etc. nothing called me quite like working with wood, construction and the building trade.
Speaking to my Father about my aspiration he said: "well, That would make you a third generation carpenter", reminding me of the many stories of my great-grandfather Herschell Rolfe who performed the original millwork at the beaverbrook museum in Fredericton (work That is still there today) and many other projects as a craftsman. Then there is my Grandfather, Raymond Hinchey who worked a life of carpentry and framing before settling down as a minister. Even my father, who would never call himself a carpenter per se, has done large scale home remodeling and always up to intricate projects involving custom wood work and innovation.
So with this history behind me and a new-found motivation to pursue Carpentry full-time, year-round by whatever means necessary, I began working as many hours as I could with inspiring mentors. I apprenticed for "David Mcqueen Construction" and learned an incredible amount from his work-ethic and traditional approach. I joined crews like "Tekton Inc." taking guidance from the talented architect "Patrick Jardine" and his awesome crew at tekton, Then with "On the level construction" learning invaluable approaches to the industry from masters like "John Boris" and "Greg Sutherland". while an apprentice, I would visit Jeff Amos anytime I got discouraged and needed inspiration or new ways of thinking. He was always charitable and willing to talk during my apprenticeship days, rest in peace. These incredibly talented craftsman, guided me safely towards the independence I was striving for, in order to serve the community as a skilled carpenter. I think often of their generosity, teachings and kindness.
After having established my own company; "Skapa Builders" in 2016, I continue to work with the community of Halifax and Dartmouth, building lasting relationships with clients and getting to live out my dream of being a carpenter.
